Custom Messenger Bags
Bags fail in specific, irritating ways. The flap won't close over a folder. The strap is two inches too short to sit where you want it. There's one cavernous compartment and nowhere for a pen. None of these are quality problems - they're fit problems, and a bag can be fitted just like a jacket.
A custom messenger bag from Gacket starts from a question most bags never ask: what do you carry, and how do you carry it? Everything after that - the internal volume, the pocket layout, the hide weight, the drop of the strap - follows from the answer.
Start with the contents
Before choosing leather or colour, list what goes in on a normal day and on your heaviest. A 13-inch laptop and a notebook is a very different bag from a DSLR with two lenses. Tell us the largest item and we'll size the main compartment around it with the clearance a flap closure needs. If a laptop is the main occupant, our custom laptop messenger bags page goes further into padding and device fit.

- Lining - cotton twill, suede or unlined, depending on how much shape you want

Choosing the hide for a bag
Bags are structural in a way garments are not, so weight matters more than softness. Full-grain cowhide is the standard: thick, holds a flat panel, takes daily abrasion and develops a patina rather than wearing out. Top-grain is lighter and more uniform for a smoother look. Goatskin is a good middle path, tough for its weight with a pebbled grain that hides scuffs. Suede suits a slouchy messenger but marks in rain. Lambskin is too soft to hold shape under load, and we'll usually steer you away from it here. See full-grain vs top-grain.
From brief to delivery for your messenger bag
- Send the brief. Contents, rough dimensions if you have them, the style you're after, and any bag you'd like it to resemble.
- Spec confirmation. We come back with exact dimensions, hide, colour, hardware finish, pocket layout and strap length for you to approve.
- Handcrafting. Panels cut, edges finished, bag stitched and assembled to your spec.
- Dispatch. Made-to-order bags typically take about 3-5 weeks. US-bound orders ship express at no cost; international charges appear at checkout.
Getting the strap right
This is the detail most people get wrong. Strap drop runs from the top of your shoulder to where the bag body sits - hip height for a relaxed carry, higher for cycling or crowds. Easiest method: wear a bag you own, adjust until it sits right, then measure from the strap's shoulder point down to the top of the bag. Send that number, and say if you'll wear it over a winter coat.
Messenger bag questions, answered
What happens if the bag isn't right when it arrives?
Custom bags sit outside our standard 7-day return window - they're made to one person's specification. We handle problems through adjustment and alteration rather than refund, so please check the confirmed spec carefully before approving it. See shipping and returns for the full position.
Will it keep its shape?
That depends on the hide weight and lining you choose, and we'll be straight with you about the trade-off. A soft, slouchy bag and a rigid, upright one are different builds - you can't have both in one piece.
How do I look after it?
Leather bags take more weather than jackets do. Our leather care guide covers conditioning and what to do after a soaking. The stitching is warranted for life.
