Design Your Own Custom Leather Vest
A leather vest has nowhere to hide. No sleeves distract the eye and no closure across the shoulders lets you fudge the fit, so every proportion is visible: where the armhole sits, how far the front panels come round your chest, whether the hem finishes at your belt or below it. A vest one size too big looks borrowed; one size too small will not close over a shirt. Being measured changes the result here more than for almost anything else you could own.
There is a second, practical reason people order vests custom. Vests get used — riding, patch work, layering under a jacket, stage wear, work in the yard. Each wants a different cut, weight of hide and set of pockets, and none are well served by a generic rack vest.
Decide the purpose first
Tell us what the vest is for before anything else, because it determines the rest of the spec. A riding vest wants heavy cowhide, a longer back for coverage when seated, and clean panels if patches are going on later. A layering vest for wear under a coat wants lighter leather and a trimmer cut so it adds no bulk. A dress waistcoat in lambskin with a shaped front is a different garment again.
Options worth thinking about
- Closure — zip, snap studs, buttons, side laces, or an open front with none.
- Collar — collarless, a small stand collar, a notch lapel, or a folded biker-style collar.
- Cut and length — straight or tapered through the waist, hem at the belt line or dropped for a longer back.
- Armhole depth — generous for layering over a shirt or jacket, or closer for a slim look.
- Side adjustment — lace panels, buckle straps or elasticated inserts if you want give.
- Pockets — chest welts, hand-warmer slashes, interior pockets sized for a phone or wallet.
- Back panel — a single unbroken panel if you intend to add patches, or seamed and shaped for a closer fit.
- Leather, lining, colour and hardware — hide and shade, lining fabric, stud, zip and buckle finish.
Fit and measurements
Three numbers do most of the work. Your chest, around the fullest part with the tape level and not pulled tight. Your waist, taken where you actually want the vest to sit rather than at your natural waist. And back length, from the bony bump at the base of your neck straight down to the hem point you want.
The forgotten measurement is armhole depth, and on a vest it decides whether the garment is usable at all. If you plan to wear it over a hoodie or jacket, say so — the armhole needs cutting deeper and wider, and that cannot be fixed afterwards. Choosing the hide
- Cowhide — the standard for toughness and structure. It stands up on its own and resists abrasion; the usual choice for riding vests. Heavier, and it takes real wear to soften.
- Full-grain — the hide's top layer with its natural surface intact. Toughest and best-ageing; expect visible character marks, which is the point.
- Goatskin — a genuinely good middle ground, durable and abrasion-resistant but noticeably more supple, with a fine pebbled grain.
- Lambskin — soft, light and luxurious against a shirt. Excellent for a dress or layering vest, less suited to hard use.
- Suede — napped and matte with a relaxed look; handsome, but least forgiving about rain and stains.

Straight answers
Can I send it back if I do not like it?
Not under the ordinary 7-day policy, which covers standard sizes. A vest cut to your measurements exists only for you, so custom orders carry different terms — we resolve issues by altering the piece rather than refunding it. Details on the shipping and returns page.
Can it be let out later if my size changes?
Sometimes. Side seams and lace panels give some scope; a heavily fitted vest in a rigid hide gives less. If you expect your size to move, ask for lace or buckle sides at the design stage — far easier than retrofitting.
Will the leather stretch?
A little, in the direction you use it. Lambskin gives noticeably, cowhide barely. We factor this in, but a vest that feels perfect on day one will feel slightly easier after a month.
