PERSONALIZED CRAFTSMANSHIP

Custom Tote Bags

Most people buy a tote and then adapt to it. The laptop fits but only diagonally. The handles are two inches too short to go over a coat shoulder. There is one cavernous compartment and everything sinks to the bottom of it. A custom tote reverses that: you describe what you carry and how you carry it, and the bag is built around that instead of around a generic pattern.

Start with the contents, not the dimensions

The most useful thing you can send us is a list of what goes in the bag every day. From that we can work back to sensible measurements. If you already know your numbers, even better - give us width, height and base depth, and say whether those are internal or external.

A few decisions that matter more than people expect:

  • Base depth. A flat tote looks elegant and holds very little. A 4-5 inch base changes the bag completely. Decide which you actually want.
  • Handle drop. Roughly 9-10 inches for hand and forearm carry; nearer 12 inches to clear a coat on the shoulder. Measure against a bag you already like.

What you choose on a custom tote

  • Overall dimensions, base gusset, and whether the sides taper or run straight
  • An optional detachable, adjustable shoulder or crossbody strap
  • Closure - open top, magnetic snap, zip, or a turnlock flap
  • Interior layout: padded laptop sleeve to a stated device size, zipped security pocket, slip pockets for phone and cards, a pen loop, a key leash
  • Lining fabric or a leather-lined interior
  • Hide, colour, edge finish and stitch colour
  • Hardware finish and protective base feet
  • Personalisation options such as initials, where available for the leather and finish you have chosen - ask when you enquire and we will confirm what is possible for your build

Which leather to choose

Totes carry weight, so the hide does more work here than in a garment.

  • Full-grain cowhide - the natural choice for a structured, hard-working tote. Thick, tough, holds its shape, and develops a patina over years of use. Heavier empty than the alternatives.
  • Goatskin - durable and supple with a fine natural grain, well suited to a softer tote that still takes daily use.
  • Suede - soft napped surface and a beautiful matte look, but it marks and does not like rain. Best for an occasional bag rather than a commuter.
  • Lambskin - very soft and light, lovely to handle, but it will not give you a bag that stands up on its own.

If you want the reasoning behind these differences, our types of leather guide covers them properly.

How your order is made

  1. Brief. Tell us what the bag needs to hold, plus any dimensions, reference photos or colour targets.
  2. Specification. We come back with the full build written out - sizes, pockets, hide, hardware - and resolve anything unclear before starting.
  3. Making. The bag is cut and handcrafted to that specification. Our guarantee covers the seams for life.
  4. Delivery. Made-to-measure orders normally ship in about 3-5 weeks. Domestic orders get free express delivery; international costs are added during checkout.

Tote questions, answered

What happens if the finished bag is not right?

Custom orders sit outside our standard 7-day return window because they are made for one buyer and cannot be resold. What we offer instead is alteration - get in touch and we will look at correcting the issue. This is exactly why we confirm the specification in writing first. The terms are set out on our shipping and returns page.

Can you match a colour I have seen elsewhere?

Sometimes. Send a photograph in daylight and we will tell you honestly whether we can get close in the hide you want. Different leathers take colour differently, so a shade that works in smooth cowhide may not translate to suede.
