Custom Leather Backpacks
Leather backpacks are usually sold as an aesthetic rather than a piece of equipment. You get a handsome shape, a vague capacity, one interior pocket, and straps in whatever length the pattern happened to use. If you carry the same things every day, that is a strange way to buy something you will wear on your back for years.
A custom backpack starts from the opposite end. What do you carry, how far, and on what kind of body? Everything else follows from those three answers.
Three questions before the design
1. What goes in it?
A 13-inch laptop and a notebook is a different bag from a 16-inch laptop, gym kit and a lunch box. Capacity is the first decision and the hardest to change later. Write out a real day's contents and measure the largest thing on the list.
2. How long do you wear it?
A ten-minute walk to an office tolerates a thin strap and a simple back panel. An hour of commuting with a full load needs wider, better-shaped straps and more thought about where the weight sits. Loaded leather is not light, and strap width is what makes it comfortable.
3. What torso is it sitting on?
Strap length is the single most common complaint about stock backpacks and the easiest thing to fix in a custom build. A long torso wears a standard pack too high; a short one wears it hanging at the hips. Tell us your torso length and the pack sits where it should.
Specifiable
- Capacity and dimensions — height, width, depth, and whether the body is structured or slouchy
- Laptop compartment — padded, sized to your machine, or left out
- Closure — flap with buckle straps, magnetic or turn-lock, drawstring under a flap, or a full zip top for quick access
- Straps — width, padding, adjustment range, and a sternum strap if you want one
- Pockets — exterior front pocket, side pockets for a bottle or umbrella, a hidden rear zip against your back, and the interior layout
- Grab handle — a simple loop or a reinforced carry handle
- Leather, colour, lining and hardware finish
- Personalisation — initials on the flap or an interior panel
Measuring for one
Backpacks need fewer measurements than a jacket but the ones they need are specific.
- Torso length — from the bony bump at the base of your neck down to the level of the top of your hip bones. This sets where the pack rides and how long the straps should be.
- Laptop dimensions — width, height and thickness, measured with any case it lives in.
- The biggest thing you carry — whatever it is, measure it. That item sets the interior.
If you own a backpack that fits you well, its strap length and body height are useful references — just tell us those are bag measurements rather than body measurements.
Which leather earns its place
A backpack takes more abuse than almost anything else we make. It gets dropped on floors, dragged into car boots, and loaded past what looks sensible.
Full-grain is the durable choice and ages into something better than it started — the corners and strap anchors patina first. Cowhide gives real structure, so the pack stands up on its own and keeps its shape empty; it is the heavier option and worth choosing deliberately. Goatskin is the quiet favourite for daily carry: tough, supple, lighter than cowhide, and its pebbled grain disguises scuffs. Top-grain gives a smoother, more uniform surface if you want a cleaner look. Suede looks superb and is the least practical choice for a bag that lives outdoors. - Send your contents list, torso length and any reference images through contact.
- We propose a spec — dimensions, layout, strap design, leather, hardware — and flag anything that will not hold up structurally under load.
- You confirm the finished dimensions.
- The hide is cut and the pack is handcrafted to order, then shipped in roughly 3–5 weeks. Express shipping is free within the USA, and international rates are calculated at checkout.
Questions
What are the return terms?
Different from stock items, and we would rather be clear about it upfront. Regular orders have a 7-day return window; custom pieces are made to one buyer's specification and follow separate terms, which in practice means alteration rather than refund. If something does not match the agreed spec we will correct it. Confirming dimensions before cutting is what keeps this from being an issue.
How heavy is a leather backpack?
Heavier than nylon, and honest about it. If weight is a concern, tell us at the spec stage — a lighter hide, less structure and a smaller gusset all help without changing the look much.
Can you add a luggage pass-through?
Ask. Practical additions like this are usually workable, and we will tell you plainly if one is not.
