Custom Leather Belts
Here is the thing almost nobody is told when they buy a belt: belt size is not waist size. A belt labelled 34 is not made for a 34-inch waist, and buying by trouser size is why so many people end up on the last hole with a long tail flapping, or on the first with the buckle straining.
Measuring: do this, not that
Do not measure your waist. Measure a belt you already own and like the fit of.
- Lay the belt flat and fully unbuckled.
- Measure from the fold at the buckle end — where the leather wraps the buckle bar, not the tip of the buckle — to the hole you actually use.
- That number, in inches, is your belt size.
If you have no belt to copy, run a tape through your trouser loops with the trousers on and fastened, and pull it to comfortable tension. That measurement is your size — usually one to three inches larger than your trouser label, which is precisely why buying by trouser size fails.
Tell us where the belt will be worn, too: low-rise jeans and high-rise trousers sit at different points and measure differently. We punch a run of five holes with your size in the centre, so you have room either way.
Width, and why it matters more than people expect
Width is decided by your trousers, not by taste. Dress trousers generally take around 1 to 1.25 inches, which slips through fine loops and sits neatly under a jacket. Jeans and chinos carry roughly 1.5 inches. If one belt has to do everything, measure the narrowest loop you own — a belt that will not pass through a loop is useless however well it is made.
Buckles and hardware
The buckle is the part people see, and it should agree with the rest of your metal — watch, cufflinks, shoe hardware.
- Style — single-prong frame (the versatile default), double-prong for a heavier look, or a plate buckle for a Western statement.
- Finish — brass, antique brass, nickel, matte black or gunmetal.
- Attachment — stitched permanently, or screwed or snapped so the buckle can be swapped later.
The rest of the spec
- Hide and colour — black, brown, tan, oxblood and beyond. Matching specific shoes? Send a photo taken in daylight.
- Lining and stitching — lined for a cleaner dress look, or a single unlined thickness for a heavier strap; thread tonal or contrast.
- Tip and personalisation — pointed, rounded or square, with initials debossed inside near the buckle where only you see them.
Choosing the leather for your belt
Full-grain cowhide is the right answer for most belts: the strongest part of the hide, it resists the stretching that ruins cheap belts and darkens with wear rather than cracking. It relaxes slightly early on and then stops, which is why we punch a range of holes. Top-grain has a sanded, more uniform surface — smoother and more formal, with less visible character. Goatskin gives a finer pebbled grain in a lighter strap. Suede makes a handsome casual belt, though it marks more easily and wants brushing rather than polishing. Questions for your belt
What if the length is wrong?
Custom pieces are made for one person and sit outside the standard 7-day return window that covers stock items. They follow different terms, with alteration rather than refund as the normal route. A belt is among the more fixable things to adjust, but the surest fix is measuring properly first. See shipping and returns.
Can you match a belt to shoes?
Often, within the limits of dyeing different hides — we will say honestly if an exact match is not realistic. Pairing a belt with something from our leather shoes is a common request.
