Custom Portfolio Bags
A portfolio is one of the few bags judged almost entirely on internal dimensions. It has to swallow a laptop with a millimetre or two to spare, hold A4 or Letter flat without curling the corners, and still close cleanly. Buy one off the shelf and you are matching your kit to somebody else's rectangle. The 16-inch machine goes into a 15-inch sleeve or rattles around in a 17. Documents bend. The one pocket you needed does not exist.
Building a portfolio to specification inverts that. You start from what actually goes inside it and the bag is made around your contents.
Start with an inventory, not a style
Before anything else, list what this bag carries on a normal day and measure the largest items. Laptop model and its exact dimensions with any case on. Whether you carry a tablet as well. Paper size — A4 and US Letter are different, and a bag cut for one is tight for the other. A charging brick, a notebook, pens, a passport, cables. Whether you need it to take a folded shirt or nothing more than paper.
That list determines the depth, the gusset and the pocket plan. Everything else is aesthetics.
What gets specified
- Exterior dimensions — height, width and gusset depth, whether slim and document-only or expanded for a full day's carry
- Laptop sleeve — padded and sized to your machine, or omitted entirely if you use a separate case
- Interior layout — number of main compartments, dividers, zip pockets, pen loops, card slots
- Exterior pockets — a rear slip for a boarding pass or a document, a front pocket, or a completely clean face
- Closure — a full zip, a flap with a buckle or turn-lock, or an open-top for constant access
- Carry — handles alone, or handles plus a detachable shoulder strap with the drop length you specify
- Leather, colour and lining, plus hardware finish from bright through to matte and dark
- Monogramming — initials, discreetly placed
Sizing it properly
The one rule worth repeating: send us the measurements of your devices, not the measurements you want the bag to be. We add the clearance. A laptop sleeve needs a little room to slide in and out and a bit more if the machine lives in a hard case, and if you have already added that allowance yourself the finished sleeve ends up loose.
Two other things people forget. Measure the laptop's thickness as well as its footprint, because that is what sets the gusset. And decide honestly whether you want a slim portfolio that looks sharp and carries little, or a working bag with real depth — a portfolio cannot be both, and picking one is the most useful decision you will make.
Leather for a bag that gets handled daily
A portfolio is gripped, set down on hard surfaces, and pushed under seats. Structure matters more than softness.
Full-grain is the natural fit. It keeps the hide's original surface, resists wear rather than shedding a finish, and develops a patina along the handles and corners that makes an older bag look better than a new one. Top-grain is sanded to a more uniform, corrected surface if you prefer an even, businesslike appearance; the full-grain vs top-grain comparison lays out the trade-off. Cowhide gives you a firm bag that holds its shape empty. Goatskin is lighter with a pebbled grain that hides scuffs well. Suede is beautiful but napped, and a bag that travels in the rain is not where we would spend it.
How your portfolio is made
- Send your inventory, dimensions and any reference images via contact.
- We come back with a proposed spec — finished dimensions, layout, leather, hardware — and raise anything that will not work structurally.
- You confirm. The hide is selected and cut for your bag specifically.
- It is handcrafted and shipped, normally within about 3–5 weeks. Express post is free within the USA, with overseas charges applied at checkout.
Portfolio questions, answered
Can I return it if I change my mind?
Custom pieces do not fall under our standard 7-day return window, because they are made to one person's specification and cannot be resold. Custom orders follow different terms — we work on alteration and correction rather than refund. If something is genuinely wrong against the agreed spec, tell us and we will put it right. Getting the dimensions confirmed before we cut is the part that protects you.
Will you make a bag from a photo?
We can work from reference images for the look. We still need real measurements for anything that has to fit, so a photo plus a device list is the ideal brief.
Is a custom portfolio heavier than a stock one?
That depends on the hide and how much structure you ask for. If weight matters, say so at the spec stage — a lighter hide and a slimmer gusset make a noticeable difference.
Does it carry the same guarantee?
Yes. Lifetime protection covers the stitching.
