Custom Trench Coats
A trench coat is the hardest garment in a wardrobe to buy off the rack, because it has to work three ways at once. It must hang correctly from the shoulder, leave room to close over a suit jacket or heavy knit, and end at a length that suits your height rather than the average the pattern was graded for. Standard sizing usually gets one of those right and compromises the other two. Made-to-measure removes the compromise: the shoulder is cut to your shoulder, the sleeve stops where you want it, and the hem lands where you chose.
It also solves the coat that simply does not exist commercially. A double-breasted leather trench in oxblood. A knee-length version for someone who is 5'2" and swims in every "regular" length. A single-breasted, beltless coat with no storm flap. If you have hunted a specific trench for months, the reason is usually that nobody mass-produces it.
What you can specify for your trench coat
- Length — above the knee to full mid-calf, measured from your own centre-back neck point.
- Front — double-breasted in the classic arrangement, or a cleaner single-breasted or concealed placket.
- Collar and lapel — wide notch, peak or a narrower modern lapel, with or without a throat latch.
- Belt and cuffs — a self-belt with covered or metal buckle, buckled cuff straps, or neither.
- Details — storm flap, back yoke, epaulettes, centre or side vents.
- Pockets — slanted welt, flapped patch, interior phone or passport pockets.
- Leather, colour, lining and hardware — hide and finish, lining weight, and buckles in polished, brushed or antiqued tones.
Getting the fit right
Trench measurements are less forgiving than a short jacket's, because errors compound over a longer body. Two things matter most. First, measure over what you will actually wear underneath — if the coat goes over tailoring, take your chest measurement wearing the jacket, not a t-shirt. Second, set your length by marking a point on your own leg rather than quoting a number; stand straight, have someone mark the hem you want, and measure from the base of your collar to that mark.

Which leather suits a trench
Length changes what a hide does. A trench has a lot of surface area and hangs from the shoulders, so weight is the first decision.
- Cowhide and full-grain hold structure. The lapels stand properly and the skirt swings rather than clings. Heavier, slower to break in, and the best ageing.
- Lambskin is soft and light, giving a fluid coat that drapes close to the body — beautiful, but a garment to treat gently.
- Suede reads less formal and matte-edged, good for a lighter transitional coat, though it needs protecting from rain.
- Shearling makes it genuine winter outerwear, at the cost of real bulk.
