Custom Leather Briefcases
A briefcase is one of the few things you carry every working day, and almost every off-the-shelf one is designed around an average that may not be you. The gusset is too shallow for a folder of drawings. The laptop sleeve was cut for a 13-inch machine and yours is 16. The strap drop is wrong for your height, so the bag rides at your ribs instead of your hip. None of these are quality problems — they're fit problems, and fit is exactly what a made-to-measure briefcase fixes.

Start with what actually goes in it
The single most useful thing you can tell us is the honest inventory of your daily carry. Most briefcase regret traces back to one of three things: the bag is deeper than it needs to be, so contents slide around; the laptop compartment has no clearance for a charging brick; or there is no dedicated home for the small items, so pens and cables collect at the bottom. Before you specify anything else, lay out everything you carry on a table and measure the largest item in all three dimensions. That single measurement drives the whole build.
What you choose on a custom briefcase
- External dimensions — width, height and gusset depth, sized to your laptop and documents rather than a stock template.
- Closure — full flap over the body, twin buckle straps, zip-top for security, or an open-top tote-style mouth if you get in and out of it constantly.
- Compartments — how many main sections, whether they're divided by a rigid partition or a soft one, and whether the laptop sleeve is padded and suspended off the base.
- Internal organisation — pen loops, card slots, a zipped valuables pocket, a slip pocket sized for a passport or a phone.
- External pockets — a rear slip pocket for a newspaper or boarding pass, a front pocket under the flap.
- Carry — rolled or flat top handle, and whether you want a detachable shoulder strap, its width, and the drop length for your height.
- Hardware — antique brass, polished nickel, matte gunmetal, on buckles, D-rings, feet and zip pulls.
- Leather and lining — hide type, colour, and a lining in cotton twill or suede.
- Personalisation — initials or a monogram, discreetly placed.
Which hide suits a briefcase
Structure matters more here than on almost any other leather piece, because a briefcase has to stand up on its own and hold a rectangular shape for years.
Full-grain cowhide is the classic answer. It's thick, firm and takes a patina that reads as age rather than wear. It's the right choice if you want a bag that keeps its shape empty. Top-grain is sanded smoother and slightly lighter, with a more uniform finish — good if you prefer a corporate, even surface over visible grain character. Goatskin is a quieter option: pebbled, genuinely durable, and lighter in the hand than cowhide of the same strength, which matters if you walk a lot. Suede looks superb but is the least practical for a bag that gets set on train floors and pavements. If you want the texture, consider suede as a lining or trim rather than the full exterior. The build sequence
- Send us your requirements — the dimensions of your laptop and largest document, the layout you want, and any reference images.
- We confirm the spec with you: measurements, hide, colour, lining, hardware and pocket plan, all agreed in writing before anything is cut.
- The hide is selected and the bag is cut, stitched and finished by hand to that spec.

Made-to-measure briefcases normally take about 3–5 weeks from confirmed spec to dispatch. Standard-size pieces move faster, in roughly 5–10 working days.
Questions people ask before ordering
Can I return a custom briefcase if I change my mind?
Not on the same basis as a stock item. Our standard 7-day return window applies to regular orders; a bespoke bag is cut to dimensions only you asked for, so custom orders follow different terms and are normally resolved by alteration rather than refund. This is why we confirm every measurement with you before cutting — please take that stage seriously.
What if the internal layout doesn't work in practice?
Talk to us. Pockets and dividers can often be reworked. Structural dimensions cannot be changed after the bag is built, which is the other reason to over-communicate at the spec stage.
Is the stitching guaranteed?
Yes. Our lifetime stitch guarantee covers it, as it covers all our handcrafted work. Leather ages and hardware can be replaced; the seams should outlast both.
How do I keep it looking right?
Very little, done regularly. Wipe it down, condition it a few times a year, and let it dry naturally if it gets caught in rain. Our leather care guide covers the routine.
