If you have a high instep, a wide forefoot on a narrow heel, one foot noticeably longer than the other, or you simply cannot find the colour you keep picturing, off-the-rack sizing is a compromise you re-buy every couple of years.

What you choose on a custom loafers
- Style — penny, tassel, horsebit, apron-toe or plain vamp.
- Leather — full-grain, top-grain, calf-weight cowhide, goatskin or suede.
- Colour and finish — from black and dark brown through tan, oxblood and mid-tone suedes; matte or polished.
- Sole — leather for a dressier profile, or rubber if you walk on wet pavements more than you sit at desks.
- Lining — full leather lining, or unlined for a lighter warm-weather shoe.
- Details — stitching colour, edge finish, tassel or bit hardware, and personalisation such as initials where the style allows.
- Fit adjustments — width, instep height, heel-cup volume, and a different length for each foot if that is what you need.
Measuring for your loafers
Measure both feet late in the day, when they are at their largest. Stand on a sheet of paper with your weight on the foot, trace around it, then take the length from heel to longest toe — which is not always the big toe. Measure the widest part of the forefoot across the ball, and take a girth measurement with a tape passed around the ball of the foot and again over the instep. Do all of this in the socks you actually intend to wear with the shoes; a thick sock costs you real millimetres.
Send both feet's numbers even when they seem identical. Small asymmetries are normal, and knowing about them is what lets a bespoke pair sit correctly on the foot that is usually the afterthought. If you own a pair that fits reasonably well, telling us the brand, size and where it rubs is often more useful than another set of numbers.
Choosing leather for your loafers
Full-grain cowhide is the workhorse: dense, resistant to scuffing, and it develops a patina rather than looking worn. Top-grain is sanded and finished to a smoother, more even surface — the better choice if you want a clean dress loafer with a consistent colour. Goatskin is a lighter option that stays supple while still taking abrasion well. Suede is napped and softer-looking, ideal for warmer months and casual wear, though it wants a brush and a protector spray rather than polish. Will they fit perfectly first time?
Accurate measurements get you a great deal closer than any size chart, but leather shoes still settle over the first few wears as the upper moulds to your foot. Tell us if anything sits wrong once they have.
