When standard sizing stops working
Shoe sizing is a single number standing in for a three-dimensional object. It describes length and almost nothing else. If your feet are wide, narrow, high in the instep, different sizes from each other, or between the sizes a brand offers, you know a correct number on the box guarantees nothing. Custom shoemaking builds the shoe around your foot rather than an average.
It also solves availability. The style you want, in the leather and colour you want, is rarely all three at once. Made to order, it is.
Styles we build to order
Oxfords and derbies, loafers in penny, tassel or bit form, chukka and Chelsea boots, monk straps, brogues with the perforation pattern you choose, and casual lace-ups. If your shape isn't listed, describe it and we'll say honestly whether we can make it. For reference points, look through men's leather shoes and leather loafers and tell us which come closest.
What gets decided
- Fit - length, width and instep height, per foot rather than one pair figure
- Upper leather - full-grain or top-grain calf and cowhide, goatskin or suede
- Colour and finish - flat, or burnished with depth at toe and heel
- Toe shape - round, almond, chisel or square
- Sole - leather for formal wear, or rubber for grip and weather
- Lining - full leather, or unlined for a lighter summer shoe
- Detailing - brogueing, medallion, cap toe or plain, stitch colour
- Hardware - eyelets, buckles and bit hardware in brass, nickel or antiqued metal
- Laces and welt - lace colour and type, welt visibility
Measuring for your shoes
This matters more here than in any other custom category. A few rules:
- Measure late in the day. Feet swell; a shoe fitted to a morning foot is tight by evening.
- Measure both feet. Most people have one longer than the other. Send both sets.
- Stand up. A seated foot is shorter and narrower than a loaded one.
- Trace, then measure. Stand on paper, pencil upright, draw around the foot, then measure the trace at its longest and widest points.
- Wrap the tape for girth. Circumference around the ball of the foot, and again over the highest point of the instep. These do more for comfort than length ever will.
- Note your usual sock. Thin dress socks and thick wool ones change the fit.
Photographs of the traces beside a ruler help us sanity-check. If a figure looks unusual we'll ask you to retake it rather than guess.
Which leather for which shoe
Full-grain calf and cowhide is the dress standard: it takes polish, burnishes well and holds shape for years. Top-grain is more uniform and slightly softer. Goatskin is durable and supple with a fine pebbled grain, good for a casual shoe. Suede looks excellent on loafers and chukkas but wants dry weather and regular brushing. - We review the figures, query anything inconsistent, and confirm the full spec for approval.
- The shoes are cut, lasted and handcrafted to your specification.
- They ship. Made-to-measure work normally takes around 3-5 weeks. Express carriage is free to US addresses, with international rates confirmed at checkout.

Are custom shoes returnable?
Not under the ordinary 7-day window that covers stock sizes. Shoes built to one person's foot cannot be resold, so custom orders are resolved through alteration and adjustment rather than refund. That's the biggest reason to take measuring slowly. Full terms on shipping and returns.
Will they be comfortable straight away?
They'll fit correctly from the first wear, but leather still needs a short break-in as the upper moulds to your foot. Wear them a few hours at a time at first - that's the leather settling, not a fit fault.
Leather sole or rubber?
Leather for formal wear and dry conditions - it breathes and looks right with a suit. Rubber if you walk a lot or commute in wet weather. Tell us how you'll actually wear them and we'll recommend rather than upsell.
