Colour is usually the reason
More custom clutch orders come down to colour than to anything else. Bridal parties need accessories that agree with a dress rather than nearly agree with it. Evening wear in a strong shade — emerald, oxblood, midnight — leaves you choosing between black and a compromise. Leather takes colour beautifully, so matching a specific tone is a realistic request rather than an ambitious one.
One honest caveat worth setting out early: a photograph on a phone screen is not a reliable colour reference, and natural hide carries its own subtle variation in tone and grain. We'll get very close, and we'll tell you plainly if a shade sits at the edge of what leather does well. If exactness matters, mention it at the start and we'll discuss it before anything is confirmed.
Everything you can decide
- Size — from something that holds a card case and a lipstick to an oversized envelope that takes a large phone, glasses and keys. Measure your phone in its case; it's the item that most often doesn't fit.
- Shape — envelope with a fold-over flap, a soft rectangular pouch, a boxier structured body, or a curved frame.
- Closure — magnetic snap for quick access, a concealed zip for security, a turn-lock, or a kiss-lock frame.
- Carry — hand-held only, a detachable wrist strap, or a fine chain or leather shoulder strap so it converts for a long evening.
- Interior — a plain lined compartment, or card slots, a slip pocket and a small zipped section for valuables.
- Lining — satin for an evening piece, suede for a softer feel, cotton for durability, in a contrast colour if you want one.
- Hardware — gold-tone, silver-tone, antique brass or matte black on the clasp, feet and strap fittings.
- Personalisation — initials or a monogram, embossed discreetly inside or on the flap. This is what makes a clutch work as a gift or as a bridesmaid's present.
Which leather suits a clutch
A clutch is held rather than loaded, so durability matters less here than on any other piece we make, and the choice is genuinely led by how you want it to look and feel in the hand.
Lambskin is the classic evening leather — very soft, light, with a fine grain and a subtle sheen that photographs well under warm light. It's delicate, but a clutch worn a few evenings a year is exactly where that delicacy is affordable. Suede gives a matte, napped surface with real depth of colour, particularly good in jewel tones; keep it away from rain and treat it with a protector. Goatskin has a distinctive fine pebbling and stands up to more handling, worth considering if the clutch will travel in a larger bag. Can I return a custom clutch?
Not under our standard 7-day return window, which covers stock items. A clutch made in your colour and dimensions is specific to you, so custom orders carry different terms and are resolved through alteration where possible rather than refund. We'd rather say that clearly now than surprise you later.
Can you match a fabric swatch exactly?
We can get very close. Leather is a natural material and takes dye with slight variation, so treat it as a close match rather than an identical one. Send a physical swatch if you can.
Will a monogram look heavy?
Only if you place it prominently. Most people prefer initials embossed inside the flap or blind-embossed in the same colour as the leather, which is visible up close and invisible across a room.
